We first met Casey when he came into our shop right before Valentine's Day last year requesting a very specific sort of bow tie- a double sided diamond tipped, tie it yourself bow tie in a flashy combo of hot pink and grey. He had his entire outfit planned for the night and we were definitely impressed with his enthusiasm and vision for his personal style.
It can often be hard to persuade a guy to wear a bow tie, so it was nice to see someone fully embracing this unique accessory. Casey recently modeled some bow ties for us and we thought it'd be great to get his perspective on fashion. If you've ever been intimidated by the bow tie (or intimidated by fashion in general) Casey has some great tips!
How would you describe your Fashion Sense?
Simple yet colorful.
All I'm wearing is a dress shirt, a pant, socks (underwear), a belt, and a pair of shoes. I'm only concerned if I match. When it comes to selecting a bow-tie, that becomes a completely different story. I started with simple solid colors because I knew that was safe. Then I stepped it up a bit with patterns and paisleys, that became fun and more interesting. The tie is more thought out because my bow ties are an immediate introduction to my personality without even introducing myself. This is the one thing, a small thing, that sets me a part from the hundreds of men, in Fargo wearing a dress shirt. Men rarely wear bow ties and now that I've worn them for so long I've become "that guy with the bow tie" to the point that if I'm caught without it, I'm asked why I'm not wearing it.
Why Bow ties?
They are more challenging (although a sixth grader on Youtube taught me how to tie one). I went straight to the most difficult tie because that's just a manly guy does.
They provoke a conversation.
They are more impressive than a regular tie and at the same time are more relaxed looking.
They are a rare and it is difficult to find - unless of course you go to AENDEE
It is an immediate display of character
It keeps the wind from seeping into my shirt when riding my harley.
Some of the smartest, most accomplished men in history wore bow ties
What is your biggest fashion advice?
I have a saying when I select my ties, "Solids are safe and have confidence in clearance". Solid colors are safe enough for the beginner to wear and there is a reason why ties are in the clearance section. Very few men are confident enough to wear a tie found on clearance (Use good judgement though, some of those ties are actually crap).
OWN IT! The only way you're going to pull this off is by acting like you've done this before. If you feel foolish, you'll act foolish and "look the fool". Take the lead as the most confident man in the room, show them how it's done and lead by example.
